OKKAN AGRI R&D Infopost | Operation Breadbasket
FOOD GENETICS/GENERAL GENETICS DEVELOPMENT-RELATED: OPERATION BREADBASKET.
4 years prior to the Vegas conference.
The US state lines have changed due to federal-level redistricting, so a lot of states are a lot more…geometric. So Oklahoma no longer has a panhandle.
That was AGES ago, of course. States aren't a thing in the States, I wager. But the territory names remain, because humans are crazy about tradition and lineage. And while much may change, the fruitful nature of the US breadbasket persisted for a long time, adapting where need be.
OKKAN AGRI™ is a massive privately-owned farming conglomerate in…Oklahoma and Kansas territories. Thousands of acres are managed, with a number of those developed and maintained with new genetic growth protocols still under testing by the FDA. The close activity with the Fed has had it courted well more than once to become a federally-owned operation, joining several medical and service-related industries in this point in time. It has held out, though, possibly for greater profit.
They are also in contact with IMB and a smaller company called Smith & Concord – more known for work with 3D printing than genetics, but looking to branch out in innovative ways.
OKKAN AGRI has become a powerhouse of production, whose previous CEO – Justin Erlanger – was even rumored to be in the running for a Nobel Prize for his collaboration efforts with UNICEF and other world hunger relief programs. The atmosphere is changing, however, as US soil becomes less viable on its own and needs to take a much more scientific route to production.
The company has been branching out more in the development of hybrid fruits/vegetables, produce longevity (how long it can last before rotting), and scale (larger vs smaller product).
The fact that this is all being done by a private business means they find themselves dealing with a lot of red tape from the Feds and lobbies opposing their continued growth; already they've absorbed dozens of smaller farm operations and the absorption of more medical/chemical-related industries leads people to wonder how far this could go.
OKKAN AGRI also has its eyes on dairy production, too, already funding but not ultimately owning facets of the dairy market. They share lab space with one of the leading dairy producers, Fresh Farms Inc.
OKKAN is big. It has its own city limits. The actual physical operation facilities, R&D, and general business ops buildings are all in the same area, though spread out by a mile or so from general food processing.
OKKAN AGRI
CEO: Sadie Houle, 47/f
Head of Operations: Markus Owens, 51/m
Lead Scientists: Ananth Prakesh, 28/m; Tonya Koike, 33/f
FDA LIASON TO OKKAN: Gayle Rider, 43/f
SMITH & CONCORD: Douglas Smith, 32/m; Monte Concord, 38/m
MISSIONS: ID key players in relation to the evolution of food genetics, zeroing in on the role OKKAN AGRI plays in its future. Find out what connections they have, ultimately pointing more fingers toward the Vegas conference. MAYHEM?? YOU DECIDE.
Players will be dropped in on OKKAN AGRI's annual "Farm Works Festival" event: it's two days where students ranging from K-12 up through college undergrad can tour OKKAN's various facilities, do workshops, and learn about how things work.
There will be a lot of people and a lot of buzz, so it's a good chance to get lost in crowds or on tours to sneak around and try to squirm into somewhere less than public; I suggest giving players capabilities of altering VR disguises to match labcoats/assembly uniforms, etc. (1)If AI is along for the ride, it could help break access codes into high-security areas like lab or storage.
(2)Get into CEO offices and snoop through mail to find the invite(s? many?) and proposals for Vegs conference-related things. Names can be dropped. Shady dealings can be acknowledged; money under the table to silence people finding out ghastly things about how genetic food alteration is altering people's diets etc. Or! Various testimonies of how said alteration is saving the world. EITHER IS OK? depending on what we want out of this food side.
This can also have notes in on other areas interested in cloning, since cloning food is quite the thing.
While disguises could be made or obtained, security will be trained in more sensitive areas (labs, exec suites) and WILL engage snoops/burglars, so there is chance for fighting.
How delicately the player team on this handles this job will affect the actual delayed impacts. Please see here for mission sign-ups.
